My name is Olly Knight and I regularly photograph proposals in secret across London for British, American and European couples who want their proposal moment documented without having to pose or feel like they’re on a film set. I’ve been to many spots in London that I think make for great backgrounds for proposals although I have to say I think the emotion and connection is more important than the backdrop for any proposal! Here’s my top 5 and I hope this is helpful if you’re planning a proposal.
5. Big Ben
At number 5 is the view of Big Ben from across the Thames. There’s quite a popular spot for taking photos here with the archway acting as a natural frame for the backdrop. Be prepared to queue here though, many people line up wanting this picture!
4. Kyoto Gardens
Kyoto Gardens is set in Holland Park and has a Japanese influence to the design with a waterfall just behind the bridge this makes the bridge an ideal place to propose on. I’d recommend early morning or evening times here as the park can get reasonably busy during the day.
3. St Paul’s Cathedral
St Paul’s is iconic and there are many places where St Paul’s can appear in the backdrop to your photos (like from the Millennium Bridge) but my favourite spot is here at the edge of a shopping centre where the reflections in the shop windows show the cathedral off in all it’s glory.
2. St Dunstan in the East
In the middle of such a busy city St Dunstan in the East is a little oasis. The Church was damaged during the second world war and now the ruins act as a beautiful backdrop to explore and to have photos taken in. This is a busy spot so I’d recommend early morning or evening.
1. Tower Bridge
My favourite place for proposals in London and definitely the most popular request I get is Tower Bridge. You can’t really beat it for a London landmark and there are several quieter areas near Tower Bridge to propose at. This spot is near the girl with a dolphin statue. The area over the river near the Shard looks nice but is so busy!
I hope that’s been useful to read. Do get in touch if you’re planning a proposal and I’d be happy to help!
