How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in the UK? (2026 Guide)
In short…
Somewhere between £1,000 and £5,000
Thanks Olly, that’s really helpful…
Longer answer… it depends on quite a few things—but I’ll try and break it down so you can make sense of it.
The rough price ranges (UK)
Let’s start with what most people actually want to know:
- £1,000–£1,500 → newer photographers, building portfolios. This is the price range that most of the Photographers I mentor would charge.
- £1,500–£2,500 → solid, experienced, but not fully established
- £2,500–£4,000 → experienced, consistent, strong body of work
- £4,000+ → highly experienced, in demand, usually with a clear style
That doesn’t mean “more expensive = better human being” by the way.
But it usually means:
- more experience
- more consistency
Why is wedding photography so expensive?
Fair question. Just ask all those couples that ghost me after I send a quote through 😉
Here’s what you’re paying for:
1. The bit you see (the wedding day)
- 8–12 hours on their feet
- Always observing, anticipating, trying not to miss moments
- Dealing with timelines, light, weather, people
That’s the easy part.
2. The bit you don’t see (before and after the wedding day)
This is where most of the time goes:
- Culling thousands of images
- Editing (properly, I don’t use AI for editing so every image is edited by me)
- Backups, storage, delivery
- Admin, emails, planning
A full wedding can easily be 30–40+ hours of work.
So when you divide the cost out… it starts to make a bit more sense.
3. Experience
Weddings are joyful chaos.
- Timelines run late
- Weather does what it wants
- Venues are darker than they looked on Instagram
- Someone’s uncle thinks he’s the photographer (hey Bob)
You’re paying for someone who can handle all of that without panicking—and still deliver (and still smile at Uncle Bob when he comments on your camera for the twentieth time…)
What affects the price?
Time of the year
Peak summer Saturdays = higher demand
Midweek or off-season = I’ll often reduce my quote to secure a booking
Coverage
I usually cover around 10 hours at a wedding but sometimes I’m hired to document until the very end of the party and sometimes couples want me for multi-day weddings
Destination weddings
Flights, accommodation, logistics—it all adds up (it used to be a lot cheaper!)
Style
Documentary photographers (like me) often sit in the mid-to-higher range because:
- it’s experience-heavy
- it relies on anticipation, not posing
Is it worth spending more?
Most couples don’t regret spending more on photography. I regret hiring my wedding photographer for only half a day. I wish I’d hired a Photographer for longer.
Most couples regret:
- Going too cheap
- Feeling awkward all day
- Not loving their photos afterwards
Because once the day’s over, the photos are what you’re left with (along with some left over cake and about 14,000 cards)
How to decide what to spend
Spend what feels comfortable— most couples will have a budget in mind, but don’t choose based on price alone
Ask yourselves:
- Do we actually love their work?
- Can we picture ourselves in those photos?
- Do we feel relaxed around them?
If the answer’s yes, you’re on the right track.
If it seems too good to be true…
If you find someone:
- Mega cheap
- Fully booked every weekend
- Producing incredible, consistent work
They’re either:
- About to put their prices up
- Massively overworked
- Or a bit of a unicorn
What do I charge?
My coverage typically sits in the £2,500–£3,500 range for South East weddings. A lot does depend on the location and date. For destination weddings I usually charge £3,500-£4,500
This includes:
- Full-day documentary coverage
- No awkward posing
- No turning your wedding into a photoshoot
- Just real moments, as they happen
- A Photographer who makes the whole process a lot easier than you think it’ll be
Final thought
You don’t need the most expensive photographer.
You just need the right one for you.
The one whose work makes you feel something—and who you trust to be there, quietly capturing everything without getting in the way.
And if you’re exploring options…
If you’re after natural, documentary-style photography (the kind where you actually get to enjoy your wedding), that’s exactly what I do.
Based in Kent, photographing weddings across the UK and abroad.
No cringe. No forced moments. Just the real stuff.
