Documentary Family Photography
Being a Husband to Kirsty and a Dad to Caleb and Rose I so appreciate photographs of us together as a family. I know first hand how fast families grow up and how important it is to have images that document afternoons or days in your family’s life that show what actually happened and genuine connections rather than everyone standing in front of a white backdrop having to say “sausages”! My approach to family photography is to spend time with a family doing something they love to do. I take on family commissions in Kent, London and elsewhere and prices start from £250.
I’ve started to also make short films like the one above for families. The film will be a minute to a couple of minutes long and will capture what you get up to as a family. I compose some music to sit behind the video and there you have it- something beautiful to keep to remind you of this stage of your family’s life. Short films start at £250. Here’s some galleries of previous family shoots…
The Taylors were a wonderful family to photograph. We went on a walk down to the river where they’ve often walked together as a family during the lockdown period this year. We came back to the garden and Eddi wowed everyone with his juggling skills (including the Photographer). Eddi said “There’s not many people that could make us feel relaxed and not awkward during a photoshoot…but Olly managed it. It just felt like we were out for a walk catching up with a good friend, but somehow he also managed to capture the most amazing pictures of our family that we absolutely love! Olly has captured a small glimpse of our family life so wonderfully and we will definitely be using him again in the future.”
Jayne Nottage is a brilliant family photographer and it was a real honour when she asked me to document some family time for them. The image of Lydia hugging her baby Brother Judah on the trampoline just gets me every-time! Jayne said “We’ve just been looking through the photos and we absolutely love them! We didn’t want them to come to an end. The layers and tones are amazing. Oh Olly they are sooooo good. Thank you so very much”
I got to photograph my friend and fellow Wedding Photographer Simon Hawkins on his 40th Birthday with his family at The Grove Ferry Picnic Site near Canterbury. His Daughter and Wife bought him a kayak so they had a picnic, pumped up the kayak and then went out on the river in it. Simon’s Wife Katie is a wedding hair and make up artist and we were all talking about how we miss weddings but family time this Summer has been such a treat! This family were a treat to photograph.
My friends The Butlers booked me to do a family shoot last week for them. This was the first time I’ve been able to work as a Photographer since we went into lockdown in March. The shoot was amazing. I spent some time photographing Will, Emily and their two girls playing in the garden and then I documented their walk across the fields next to their house. I appreciated jokes made up by a 4 year old, lots of skipping and some really sweet moments between the two Sisters as they held hands out on the walk. Emily said “Time with Olly was a TOTAL joy! We genuinely forgot he was there to take pictures and we were just chatting and laughing together. The photos are totally beautiful and capture the heart of our little family, we adore them and will treasure them so much.”
I photographed Dan & Sarah’s Wedding back in 2014 and had really fond memories of being around them and their brilliant laughs! When they had their Son Orson and got in contact to talk about me documenting a bit of their family life in London I couldn’t say no! Sarah said “After photographing our wedding back in 2014 and being so thrilled with those photos, we knew there was only one person we wanted to capture our family life! Olly is so lovely, and put us all at total ease, making for a relaxed, happy, fun shoot, where we got the most brilliant pictures capturing a day in our life. We would recommend Olly time and time again, and if we add to our brood then we’ll be in touch again!! Thanks Olly x”
Here’s a recent Canterbury Family Photography shoot I did for Craig, Jo and their little Daughter Verity. This session was bought as a present for Jo’s birthday from her Bother. They wanted their family life captured at home in Canterbury. Verity was 4 months old and was incredible throughout the time I was with them- no tears just smiles! It was a pleasure being around this family for an hour, they made me feel so welcome and they showed so much appreciation for their little one! I’ve chosen my favourite images out of the ones I took. Jo emailed me to say “Hi Olly, Thank you so much for the beautiful photos that you took. Thank you, Jo x”
It was an absolute privilege to photograph this Christmas family photo shoot for my friends in Chartham, near Canterbury in Kent. Ben and Jo wanted a mixture of pictures in their house with their Christmas jumpers on and decorations up and then some out and about in Chartham. Jo said “When our son Teddy came into our lives, we knew we wanted to capture his precious early days and our first memories as a new family in a special way – our first Christmas together felt like the perfect time. Our photo shoot with Olly was not only unique and creative, but we also felt listened to and relaxed, which meant our photos tell a genuine story. We can’t wait to show them to Ted and relive this lovely morning! We heartily recommend Olly to anyone considering a family photo shoot.”
I photographed 3 day old Rudy in Canterbury with his Parents Helen & Stuart. Helen’s Mum booked me to do the photography as a present for the family. Afterwards Helen sent me this review “We had our new baby photographed by Olly and It was so relaxed and laid back- With images more beautiful than I’d even imagined. I’d certainly recommend his services without a second thought.”
I spent a lovely Summer’s morning with Robert, Alison and their two children at Whitstable Beach in Kent for their family photo shoot. They wanted some pictures to remind themselves of life in Whitstable as they are relocating to the North very soon. They walked along the beach, played a game of piggy in the middle and threw stones into the sea. A lovely morning and a great family! Alison emailed me with this lovely review: “Working with Olly was good fun. Initially we were a bit uncertain about being natural for the camera but Olly made light conversation with us, in no time we all in the swing of it. The time flew by quickly, we a had a great time and we got some very memorable photos to remember our time in Whitstsble! Olly is a true professional, he has a fresh look on family photos!”
